Where do you start?

At home with friends and family
The only things you really need to start are 4 bridge players, 1 pack of cards and a table to play on.

More People Join In
When you have 8 people or more and you want to play duplicate bridge, then you will need to be able to know who did what on which set of hands (board) and you will want everyone to play all the boards. This will entail having a way of keeping and numbering the hands.

Duplicate Boards such as on the left will keep the hands organised and giving each table a number will help people to know where to go next Score cards and Travellers are next. Each person will have a score card where they note what happened on each hand. Every board will have a Traveller that will as the name suggests travels with the board, on it a record of all the results for that board (who played whom and what happened)

Even More People Join In
Once you have acquired some more people your list of requirements goes up. Now you need a plan as to how to ensure no one plays the same hands or the same people twice. The way you ensure that is to to follow a plan of where the boards go and where the people go after every round. These plans are known as Movements

Time to get Organised
So you now have multiple packs of cards, tables, duplicate boards and stationary as well as players and if they don't all fit into your house, it is time to think about having somewhere bigger that can fit you all in. Typically a village hall, a community centre or a room in a pub, even a room in a commercial premises eg Sports or Social Club. When should you play evening or afternoo, which day, when can you book a room ???

Now You are a club
Since you have to pay for the use of a room you will need to think about having a treasurer who collects money from all the players (how much?) and pays for the room hire as well as the extra boards, tables, cards etc. The next thing you need is someone to keep control and a rule book to help them. What about a committee to share the load? There are now plenty of jobs to do.

Decision Time
You now have money in the bank and you have some decisions to make
Do you want to score on a laptop?
Do you want to get rid of the paper records?
Do you want a website?
Are you fed up dealing the hands?
Do you want to join the EBU?
Are there any legal issues?
